Tyler and Austin were baptised last Saturday evening. We've been trying to prepare them for the past couple of months, talking about bible stories, talking about the actual baptism and reminding them there will be a celebration afterwards. Tyler was extremely nervous about it, but he has a very generic book of bible stories that epicts the baby being completely submerged for the baptism. This freaked him out and quite frankly, would me too! Here's our conversation:
Me: Tyler, are you ready to be baptised next week? Tyler: No Me: Why not? Tyler: Because it will hurt Me: It won't hurt, I promise. (Explain what the priest will do) Tyler: Well...how long are they going to hold me under water? Me: Hold you under water? Tyler: Yeah, in the book they hold the baby under water. How long will I have to be under water? Me: OOOOH, I see. Well, you see they don't hold you under water, in fact, you barely get wet. Father Austin will pour holy water on your head, each drop representing the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. You'll learn more about this when you go to CCD this fall. Tyler: Ok, so I don't have to get in water? Me: Nope! Tyler: Cool, when do we go?
So, as you can see...he was rightfully terrified. We got to the church and they were somewhat content, but had a little nervous energy (sure, that's what I'll call it!! ha ha.) Once we went up to get them officially baptised they were sooo excited! I picked Tyler up and held him, as he giggled the entire time! Then Chris lifted Austin, and Austin giggled too--by the time he was done, Austin says, that was fun, let's do it again! The priest was so tickled, not only because they did so well, but also because Austin's name is the same as his. Towards the end of the service the boys got very rambunctious, including dancing in the aisle. Father Austin was amused by that, too. At the end of the service, he dedicates a special prayer individually for Chris and I. I've never been to a baptism where they've prayed individually for the parents, but again, Father Austin watched the boys (we sat in the front row) the entire time, so we figure that's where that stemmed from. It was a sign!
